Forget about replacing the pump and motor. Unless you have a spare robot for parts, internal maytronics parts are impossible to get. Your dealer will send your robot out for repair.

Prevention is the best remedy. Avoid operating your Maytronics cleaner under any conditions that will clog the bag and prevent water circulation around the motor housing. Heat will destroy the electrical components inside the case.

Re-coil the cable after every use starting at the robot and working the twists outward to the plug. Chances are..if your cable will not float straight and is always being sucked into the robot, that cable has most likely been stored in a piled twisted mess. Recoiling the cable takes all of 30 seconds and saves hours of aggravation.

Maytronics Dolphin Drive Track Removal

1. Remove the bottom plate with bag.

2. With the machine upside down, remove the screws holding the debris shield and remove the shield.

3. Remove the screws holding the side plate.

4. Gently pry off the sideplate. It may need much persuasion due to dirt buildup on the sideplate pegs that slide into the body.

Be sure to clean dirt, debris and other contaminants from the parts that slide into each other.

5. Remove the drive track. The system is direct drive with the drive gear in the center. Drive gear and pulleys slide off the spindles.

FOR THE CURIOUS I opened a motor compartment to satisfy the question of what is in it. No instructions are included to put it back together because parts are unavailable.

The motor assembly inside the robot body is held in place by screws accessible once the sideplates are removed. Inside the box is the pump, drive motor, circuit board and a counterweight to offset the buoyancy of the air filled box.

Opening this box creates the challenge of airtight reassembly. The gasket must be re-used and I suggest a good coating of silicone to keep it pliable and easier to slide into position.

Notice the motors have little direct cooling contact with the water.

This cleaner comes with a great oversized debris cartridge, so you can sometimes do multiple cleanings without having to empty it out. When it is time to empty it, it’s super easy to remove and empty the filter cartridge. Plus, this model weighs just 14 pounds, which makes it easier to get it in and out of above-ground pools.

However, many above-ground pools need fine particle filtration. If you’re looking for that, you’ll have to spend extra and get the fine particle filtration basket. While it does cost a few hundred dollars, top-of-the-line models can set you back far more than that.

One thing we don’t like is that it lacks a handle. That makes it harder to lower it into the pool, and also makes it harder to get it back out when the cleaning cycle is over. This model also suffers from a relatively small storage capacity, which means you won’t be able to clean the pool as frequently without having to change the filter cartridges. What is a robotic pool cleaner?

If you’ve owned a pool before, you may be familiar with the three common types of automatic pool cleaners: suction-side, pressure-side, and robotic. Suction-side cleaners attach to the intake part of your pool and use the power from your pool’s pump to collect debris. Pressure-side models work similarly but instead attach to the other side of the system, the one that’s pushing water into your pool.

These two cleaner types generally aren’t smart. They move around at random, and if you let them go long enough, they’ll eventually cover your entire pool. Another big downside is that they’re dependent on your pool’s pump to work. If your pump is on the weaker side, you may get very mediocre results from pressure- or suction-side pool cleaners.

Robotic models differ in that they don’t attach to your pool’s pump system. Instead, they’re powered by electricity and carry a filter and either a basket or bag with them. That means they’re a great choice for pools with weaker pumps.

While you may think robotic cleaners would have a higher cost of operation, the opposite is often true. Since the pump has to do its own job, plus power the suction-side or pressure-side pool cleaner, it can draw many times the energy it would otherwise use. Consequently, in many cases, a robotic pool cleaner will draw less electricity, leading to a lower cost of operation. It will also put less strain on your pool pump, which could extend its life.

What can robotic pool cleaners do?

One of the hallmark features of a robotic pool cleaner is that it can use electronic equipment. That means it can either keep track of where it has been in your pool, use information from a suite of sensors to figure out where it should go next, or both.

If that sounds futuristic, that’s because it still is to some extent. Most Dolphin cleaners have some version of this technology. The most commonly used type on robotic models is the cartridge. The cartridge is a hard-sided filter that lives inside the cleaner. When it needs to be emptied, you just pop the lid on the robot and dump the filter out. Generally, it needs to be washed off as well, but as soon as that’s done, you’re ready to go again.

Filter cartridges are designed to last for years. Usually, they do last years. However, they tend to be very expensive to replace, so it’s a good idea to treat yours with care.

If you have serious dirt or algae problems on the walls or a lot of fine dirt in the water, use a cartridge or bag that’s fine-particulate ready. Otherwise, the holes in the filter will be large enough for the dirt or algae to slip through, which ultimately leaves it in the pool.
