Sep 13, 2000 Mac OS X & macOS version code-names Here's a brief history on Mac OS X and macOS code names, plus how to find out what is the latest macOS and which version. Quickly find which OS X versions are compatible with your Mac model and year. Guide includes OS X 10.7.x (Lion) through OS X 10.14.x (Mojave).
From 2001 to 2012, OS X was code-named internally (for development purposes) after big cats. Becuase Apple marketing was also using those code-names to promote OS X publicly, however, the company's development crew switched their internal naming structure to wines beginning with OS X 10.3 — publicly known as Panther, privately as 'Pinot.' (Apple did make one exception for OS X 10.6, which never had a code-name beyond Snow Leopard.)
Though Apple's external code-names for OS X switched to California places in 2013, the internal code-names remained wine-based until 2014. In 2015, the development team switched to types of apples, with OS X 10.11 El Capitan (AKA 'Gala').

Mac Os X Version Names
I have a 2008 MacBook (Core 2 Duo, SSD, 4 GB of RAM) running El Capitan and a 2009 iMac (Core i5, SSD, 12 GB of RAM) running Yosemite. Both of them present bugs, glitches and other stuff that have little to do with what we all sure agree is the gold standard for stability, usability and speed—OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
I want to downgrade, however, I'm not quite sure which OS X release is the best alternative.
I'd go straight to Snow Leopard if it wasn't because it doesn't support iCloud. On the other hand, I think there needs to be an equilibrium in terms of oldness-stability. After all, some apps are kind of picky when it comes to the OS X versions they support.
What's your choice?
