Hi Lorraine,

I understand that your Simple tech 160 GB external hard drive is not working with Windows 8.

Please answer the following questions for better understanding of the issue:

1)What happens when you connect the Hard Drive? Do you get any error message/code?

2)What is the model number of your external Hard drive?

3) What is the make and model of the computer?

4) Does the external disk work properly on other computers?

5) Do other USB devices work properly on the computer?

6)Is the hard disk detected in Device Manager?

This issue could be caused due to some corrupted system files, incorrect settings or some hardware issues with the hard drive.

Hence, I would suggest you to connect your hard drive to another computer and check; if it gets detected then I would suggest you try these steps and check.

If it doesn’t get detected, then it could be hardware issue with the hard drive.

Let us perform the following troubleshooting steps and check if that resolves the issue:

b) Type “Troubleshooter” in the Search box and hit enter.

c)Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

d)Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.

e)Follow the On Screen instructions

Method 2: Run the Hardware Troubleshooter.
