Thanks for your reply. My windows 10 laptop quite often has shut down without notification. Although I have set low battery warning when battery power reaches 10%, windows shuts down the computer when battery level reaches 10%. Now this has happened quite a few times so I'd like to run a diagnostics tool that can fix any problems this unexpected shut down might have caused to the hard drive. As you know its not good for the computer to shut down without any warning notification. This could cause problems to the hard drive. This is the reason I asked you for diagnostic tools to check the hard drive.

Unplug your Laptop and remove the battery
Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds
Plug your laptop back in and replace the Battery
Start your PC
Open Device Manager (accessible by right clicking your Start Button)
Expand the Batteries section
For each device in that section:
Right click and choose Disable
Then right click and choose Enable
Close Device Manager
Open the Settings App
Go to Update & Security - Troubleshoot
Run these troubleshooters
Hardware and devices
Power

Thanks for your help. I have followed the instructions you provided. If it works I will let you know soon.

What I'd like to ask you if there is a tool that can check the hard drive. Because as I said in my previous post the laptop shut down unexpectedly quite a few times. As a result this might have caused some problems to the hard drive. So I'd like to check the hard drive itself. In windows vista there was a tool called CHDISCK if I'm right. I don't know in windows 10. There must be something.

Hi Ge285 an unexpected shut down is unlikely to have damaged your hard drive . . .
Chkdsk is available in all versions of Windows, it cannot be run on you hard rive when Windows is running . . .
Press the Shift Key and click Restart
Your PC will boot into the Windows Recovery Environment
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Command Prompt
Run this command and hit Enter:
chkdsk C: /f
When that command completes, run this command and hit Enter:
chkdsk C: /r
That command will take time to complete, when it does, close Command Prompt and restart your PC

I asked for the CHKDSK command. When I had a vista machine the users were advised to run the CHKDSK command when an unexpected shut down occurred (say a power cut).

Because my windows 10 laptop shut down unexpectedly I thought I should run CHKDSK to repair any errors the unexpectedly shut down caused to the hard drive. DaveM121 says an unexpected shut down won’t damage the hard drive. He also gave me instructions on how to run CHKDSK on windows 10. Thank you.

DaveM121 says an unexpected shut down won’t damage the hard drive.

On the contrary, an unexpected shut down can absolutely damage your hard drive. That's why people (and businesses) buy a UPS (uninterruptible power supply.)
